Edward Salmon Receives Honorary Degree from Thomas Edison State College
MILLVILLE, NJ — On October 9, 2010, Dr. Edward H. Salmon was awarded a Doctor of Humane Letters honoris causa from Thomas Edison State College at the school’s 38th Annual Commencement held at the Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial in Trenton, NJ. Dr. George A. Pruitt, President of the College since 1982, conferred the honorary degree on Dr. Salmon for his service as a “committed, effective and consistent advocate for educational opportunity” and for his work as an “untiring civic activist, philanthropist and humanitarian.”
Thomas Edison State College, based in Trenton, NJ, is a unique institution chartered for the purpose of serving mature adults. The school enrolls over 18,000 adults representing every U.S. state and 55 foreign countries. The average age of the student body is 40 years old. Students can earn Associates degrees, Bachelor’s degrees and Masters degrees. The College was identified by Forbes as one of the top 20 colleges and universities in the nation in the use of technology to create learning opportunities for adults.
In selecting recipients for the Doctor of Humane Letters, the highest honor a college or university can bestow on an individual, the College attempts to identify outstanding individuals who, in their life’s work, reflect the mission of Thomas Edison State College. Previous year’s recipients have included New Jersey Governor Thomas H. Kean, Morris Keeton, Pearl Bailey, Dow Jones CEO Peter Kann, Fred Friendly and Dr. Shirley Charter. Richard P Mills, former Commissioner of the New York State Education Department, received an honorary degree along with Dr. Salmon.
“It was an honor to be recognized with this award alongside this year’s outstanding graduating class,” said Dr. Salmon. “Education is truly a life-long endeavor. I am extremely pleased that New Jersey is home to institutions like Thomas Edison State College that provide superb learning opportunities for motivated adults.”
Dr. Salmon is cofounder and Chairman of Salmon Ventures Limited, a national consulting firm based in Millville, NJ. In a career of public service spanning over 40 years, he has worked as a teacher, coach, school administrator, director of Public Works, Mayor, Freeholder Director, Assemblyman and member of the Governor’s cabinet in his role as President of the NJ Board of Public Utilities. During his tenure on the BPU, Dr. Salmon was a highly active member of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). He is currently President of NARUC Commissioners Emeritus.
Dr. Salmon resides on Clark’s Pond in Bridgeton, NJ with his wife of 46 years, Marilyn Salmon. They have two children and 11 grandchildren.
